LIVE Kicks presents: Motus O’s ‘One Hit Wonders’!
Nov 18, 2017 7:30 pm
Motus O, a huge favorite of Golden theatre goers, is returning to the stage at the Civic Centre this month.
One of Canada’s most cherished and accomplished dance-theatre companies, MOTUS O has been developing a unique and deeply creative approach to performance for nearly three decades. Specializing in family-friendly shows, the multiple award-winning MOTUS O combines athletic choreography, innovative staging and costuming, exciting music – and a decidedly wacky sensibility – to boldly reinvent classic repertoire, from Alice in Wonderland to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
They have created 22 full-length productions, many of which have toured North America, Britain, and Australia. Over the years, MOTUS O has occasionally created shorter works for special occasions, pieces performed once and then, sadly, shelved. Rather than let all those mini-masterpieces languish in obscurity, nine of them have been resurrected as One Hit Wonders, the company’s current touring show.
One audience pleaser is sure to be Musical Ride, which was part of the opening ceremonies for the 2015 Pan Am Games; the MOTUS O dancers were specially trained by members of the RCMP Musical Ride so that this “hobby horse” adaptation would use actual performance patterns and feel authentic.
Lullaby and Goodnight is an alternately funny and poignant monologue featuring a woman’s 12-month struggle with the responsibilities that come with motherhood.
And despite the odd title, Transcending Arthropod Diapause engagingly explores the complex relationship between two male dancers who have evolved and changed after working and dancing with each other for 30 years. That’s just a taste of the inventive stories that will unfold as MOTUS O draws the audience into their signature realm of intense physicality and extravagant humour. Find out why the Globe and Mail’s H.J. Kirchoff calls them “an innovative and high energy troupe.”
