Columbia Valley & East Kootenay
Key City Theatre
Key City Theatre is a first-class cultural centre for the East Kootenay area, a 602-seat facility for the performing arts, conferences and cultural events. The Art Gallery hosts many exhibitions during the course of the year.
In the mid-1970s, lovers of the arts in Cranbrook dreamed of creating a venue where all the many forms of the fine arts could be showcased to the audiences who appreciated them. Their efforts met, at first, with refusal by the city to finance such a venture.
A decade later, though, their dream was realized. Thanks to the continued commitment of the school district, the City of Cranbrook and the support of the BC government and the local citizens, they were able to build the Key City Theatre totally debt-free. It stands today as a tribute to the many people that came together to make that dream a reality.
The theatre hosts nearly 100 events each year. Because it is such a large facility, equipped with up-to-date audio-visual and lighting technology, the Key City Theatre attracts many major artists, opening a wide range of cultural options which would perhaps not be available to the smaller communities in the Columbia Valley. There are live musical concerts with professional musicians, school and church group events, dance recitals, memorial services – the list is awe-inspiring!
The facility is available for rental to community and commercial groups and organizations. Included in the rentals are options of having staffing, ticketing, technical and marketing experts, a Green Room, dressing rooms, concession and bar services.
Small, intimate performances find the spacious foyer with its grand piano an ideal venue. There is a meeting room with kitchen facilities as well.
