Source to Sea

May 15, 2016 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

| $10

Source to Sea is a huge undertaking of young professionals of two nations with the purpose of bringing to the public’s attention, the behind-closed-doors negotiations between BC Hydro and the US in preparation for the re-negotiation in 2024 of the historic Columbia River Treaty. Two very similar events, one in Canal Flats, the head of the Columbia River and the other in Astoria, Oregon, the mouth of the Columbia River have been planned to take place simultaneously.

In Canal Flats, Source to Sea will involve a headwaters walk at 1 pm, with local elders, youth and watershed activists. Following that,  a film screening, music, poetry and storytelling at 2:30 pm at the Civic Centre. The public are invited to celebrate the source of the Columbia River and enjoy the extraordinary stories, films and music shared by First Nations and settlers of this region.

CBTYN member Tessa Terbasket says, “Unlike the people of the Columbia Basin, the waters of the Columbia flow between jurisdictions and across borders. Historical wrongdoings have disconnected the communities of the Columbia and have taken away the voice of the river itself. Current social and ecological perspectives demand a reconnection to water, place and each other.
