Parks Canada is the guardian of not only the country’s more than 50 National Parks but also 4 National Marine Conservation Areas and around 200 National Historic Sites.
Their mandate, as stated on their website, reads: “On behalf of the people of Canada, we protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage, and foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure the ecological and commemorative integrity of these places for present and future generations.”
Canada is divided into 39 natural regions, through the National Parks System Plan. Located in every province and territory, these natural regions consist of every type of landscape from mountains to plains, boreal forests and tundra, lakes and glaciers. Parks Canada protects and manages the ecosystems of these areas.
