In 2013, eight outdoors-related groups, more than 500 members in all, joined forces to form the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance. Since they all shared the same vision and were working toward making it happen, the groups determined that it would be beneficial to work together for their common purpose, that being ‘to create a world-class network of inter-connected multi-purpose trails throughout the Columbia Valley’.
According to their mission statement, they are “community organizations working in partnership to advocate the development, maintenance and responsible use of sustainable trails on public and private lands to promote year-round healthy living and community values.”
They also collaborate with other groups who have a vested interest in the trail network, such groups as landowners, First Nation, developers, conservation groups and governments at all levels.
The project that is near and dear to the hearts of our local Columbia Valley community is the Westside Legacy Trail, an approximately 25 km-long, multi-use, non-motorized paved trail connecting the communities of Invermere and Fairmont Hot Springs. Running along the west side of Lake Windermere and paralleling Westiside Road, the trail is being constructed mostly on private land and within Ministry of Transportation right-of-ways.
One of the biggest concerns of the group and also the many residents of the area who walk, run, jog or cycle alongside the busy roadway, is safety. The Westside Legacy Trail addresses that concern. The Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance has an larger vision, though – to expand the trail north from Invermere to Radium Hot Springs, making a total length of 51 paved kilometers and linking two world-class mineral hot springs.
Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance is located at #203, 375 Laurier St, Athalmer (above Columbia Cycle)
