‘The Sense of an Ending’ – Cinefest 2017 Fall Program
Nov 14, 2017 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The Sense of an Ending is the 4th of the Cinefest fall series of independent films brought to the Columbia Valley by CV Arts and the Toronto International Film Circuit.
The Story
Based on the Man Booker winning novel by Julian Barnes and directed by Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox), this is an story of self-discovery. Tony Webster (Jim Broadbent) is a 60-something man who runs a camera shop. His love of cameras began when he received one from his girlfriend, Veronica (Charlotte Rampling) before she left him for his best friend, Adrian (Joe Alwyn). Tony wrote them a strongly worded letter but despite cutting all ties, he was never able to move on with his life.
After Adrian passes away, Tony receives word that he has been willed a diary. The writing inside reopens a window to the past, causing him to re-examine secrets and perspectives other than his own. Batra interweaves Tony’s present revelations and the memories of his fateful relationship, with the young Tony and Veronica (Billy Howie and Freya Mavor).
As much as The Sense of an Ending is about regret and the nature of “truth,” it is also about closure, forgiveness, and love, and reminds us to embrace the flaws that make us human.
