‘Last Stand: The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest’ – a film for East Kootenay
Nov 8, 2017 7:30 pm - Nov 21, 2017 7:30 pm
Last Stand: The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest is on tour in the Kootenays and five of our East Kootenay communities have planned screenings of this provocative film.
Last Stand: The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest is a cinematic journey into the tragically threatened world of endangered mountain caribou whose home is the world’s largest remaining inland temperate rainforest. Critical human and political choices will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem, which spans from the US, through much of the Kootenays, north to the Yellowhead Highway.
With Canada failing to protect critical caribou habitat from logging, mining, and recreation, honor the treaty rights of indigenous peoples, and protect the integrity of the natural systems of this region, this film gives voice to First Nations, scientists, foresters, conservationists, and recreationists attempting to chart a new path forward before it is too late.
Join Wildsight and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative for a screening of the 35-minute film in your community, followed by a panel discussion on the endangered mountain caribou with experts and conservationists, including: John Bergenske and Dave Quinn of Wildsight, Candace Batycki of Y2Y, the filmmaker David Moskowitz, Trevor Kinley, Parks Canada biologist, Greg Utzig, conservation ecologist, Rob Serrouya, manager of caribou monitoring at U of Alberta, Jim Smith, forester, Jasmin Caton, Valhalla Mountain Touring owner & Patagonia ambassador, and Adrian Leslie, NCC South Selkirks Program Manager.
