The Second Mother is a rich, complex comic-drama which  subverts the absurdity of familial, generational and class constructs we all subscribe to.

Val is a woman from who leaves her young daughter, Jessica, behind with her grandfather in Pernambuco in the northeast part of Brazil, to go to Sao Paulo in the southwest, in an attempt to make a better life for her child. She finds work as a live-in housemaid in the household of a wealthy family, where she grows attached to the only child, Fabinho. It is 13 years before Val is economically stable and when Fabinho is about to take a difficult university entrance exam, she hears from Jessica that she is coming to Sao Paulo to take the same exam.

Jessica is welcomed into the home of Val’s employer and the girl who has been raised with very different values brings a clash of cultural differences into the household.

The film brilliantly contrasts rich and poor and the very different political differences of the north and south geographical areas, the segregational Brazil and the idea of national unity. This film is suitable for all ages.
