The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) is a registered non-profit society, a dynamic group of governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. The council came into being as a result of a 3-year pilot project which proved to be effective as a means of managing the invasive plant and aquatic species in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia.
Invasive species pose a danger to the health of our environment and as a result, have a negative effect upon our social and economic health as well. The purpose of the council is to co-ordinate the education of the public about this problem and carry out various treatment programs to combat the encroachment of these species.
- to encourage a public committed to an invasive species-free Kootenay region
- to co-ordinate the management of local invasive species on both public and private lands
- to obrain funding for the education, prevention and treatment programs which will see our communities invasive species-free.
Each year, the EKISC hosts either a field tour or a forum. They also host open houses in various communities, the purpose being to educate residents about the specific invasive species which inhabit their area and what is being done to combat the negative effect of them.
