Radium area cougar alert
Parks Canada has issued a cougar warning for some of the hiking trails in the Radium Hot Springs area of Kootenay National Park. Two cougar attacks occurred upon sheep within a period of a week during the month of March 2012. Although the cougar(s) have so far shown no aggression toward humans, members of the public are advised to use caution when traveling in the area and Parks Canada will continue to monitor for cougar activity. Heads up!
Kootenay National Park has been keeping track of when Columbia ground squirrels emerge from hibernation. Their appearance dates in April can vary from year to year. However their emergence pattern is the same — first the adult males surface, then slightly later the adult females, and finally the yearlings of both sexes. During the next 4 months adult squirrels must reproduce and store enough fat for 8 months of hibernation.
