‘Art from the attic’
Elinor Florence

Sep 3, Invermere –
Hundreds of donated art works will be sold on Saturday, September 3rd in a brand new valley event called ‘Art From the Attic’.
Doors at the Invermere Community Hall will open at 9 am sharp when customers will be invited to view and purchase art works including posters, prints, paintings and photographs until 4 pm
A huge variety of current art will be available, ranging from original pieces by local artists such as Lynn Grillmair, June Thomsen and Carney Oudendag to prints by noted Canadian artists Robert Bateman, Albert Casson and David Veres.
A selection of vintage art will also be available including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and lithographs — even paintings on velvet! If you are looking for a particular subject for your collection or a Christmas gift, try browsing through the specialty items, including wildlife photographs, needlework and movie posters.
Where possible, information about the artists will be provided. However, many original works are by unknown artists. You may just find something that’s worth a lot of money — but more likely, you’ll find something that you just fall in love with.
Art supplies will also be on sale, including some excellent frames, mats, glass and canvasses suitable for recycling. The organizers urge shoppers to use their imaginations, as there are some very high-quality frames for sale. Remember, all frames can be painted.
Art will be pre-priced and organizers will not accept offers. A half-price sale will be held for the last hour of the day. If you spot something you love, you can take a chance that it will still be there later and return from 3 to 4 pm for a better deal. However, since this event is being held to raise money for charity, patrons are always welcome to pay more than the asking price.
Please note that the organizers will not accept credit or debit cards, so bring your cash or personal cheques with you.
The Royal Canadian Legion will provide a concession throughout the day for customers who need refreshments during their shopping experience.
Fifty percent of all proceeds will go towards the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary, which works tirelessly to raise money for the local hospital. The other 50 percent will go towards the Columbia Valley Arts Council, which supports the visual and performing arts in our community.
The Invermere Community Centre is located just one block off the main street, around the corner from the downtown post office, at 1709-10th Street. After browsing through the wares at Art From the Attic, continue your ‘art shopping’ with a visit to Artym Gallery, Effusion Gallery, Black Star Gallery and Village Arts Co-op, all located on main street Invermere, and wind up by dropping into Pynelogs Cultural Centre at Kinsmen Beach, where a show of local artists will continue until September 4th.
For more information or to donate an unwanted piece of art to a good cause, please call 250-342-0444 or drop your items at the Invermere Thrift Store or Pynelogs Cultural Centre. Donations will be gratefully accepted until noon on Friday, September 2nd.
